The Bala-Cynwyd Women’s Club used the most recent additions to the Lower Merion Library Company’s holdings to start the Bala-Cynwyd Library, which opened July 1915. When the Cynwyd Elementary School opened in 1914, the Lower Merion Academy closed as an independent school after 102 years. The trustees changed its name to “Lower Merion Library Company” by 1849. Individuals donated their own books to this, the Township’s first public lending library. In 1842, the Trustees of the Lower Merion Academy established the “Lower Merion Literary Company” on the third floor Committee or Library Room, today home to the Lower Merion Historical Society.
